COMMUNITY OUTREACH
& ENGAGEMENT
Through Our Lens
Over the years, I have partnered with nonprofits and businesses in Atlanta to bring the art of photography to youth through classes, summer activities, and workshops. Expressing oneself through photography as part of creative arts, creative mentoring, curriculum expansion activity, and other new opportunities using a traditional camera or a mobile phone allows youth to experience their environment, communities, and world through a new perspective.
I recently partnered with Women Empowered to Prosper to create a youth empowerment program. A program where the youth have a parent, mentor, or adult to join them for a beginner's class in photography. The youth-led 2-person team spends 8 hours over two days of quality time with their chosen adult, visiting community locations that inspire, motivate, or create a desire for discussion using photography.
In 2023, Through Our Lens wants to share the talent of our youth with the community. Women Empowered to Prosper has joined Nickelodeon and Change X in taking Through Our Lens to the next level. The Through Our Lens: Kids Empowerment Photography Program for the Nickelodeon Community Fund Atlanta opportunity allows youth to learn photography and express their surroundings through visual art.
Nickelodeon sees kids as playing an active role in their communities and having hopes, dreams, and goals on how to shape their neighborhoods. Its community fund is dedicated to empowering kids with resources and support to bring to life projects that might otherwise go unfunded in areas such as arts, STEM, and environmental sustainability. Working with a grown-up co-leader, kids will actively lead these projects and have the chance to shape their communities for the better.
In partnership with ChangeX and Playful Learning Landscapes Action Network, Nickelodeon presents the Urban Thinkscape project to transform community public spaces into joyful learning opportunities for kids, grouping three low-cost activities together to generate high-quality interactions between children and caregivers in an urban environment.
